Sugar and consequences
56
If we go back to the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries before the arrival of cane sugar to Europe, the sugar that we consume today did not exist as such, were used as all-natural sweeteners like honey, and the man met his sweet need by eating fresh and dried fruit. But with the advent of refined sugar is completely managed to shift its use as such, bringing a number of adverse effects to our health.
Today, the sugar found in supermarkets or most of the houses is a product made from the juice of beet or cane sugar. Industrially, through various physical and chemical processes of extraction and refining yields a simple carbohydrate called sucrose, or more commonly white sugar.
Being a product that has undergone industrial processing, it is possible to consider a food in itself, since all the nutritional properties it had in its natural state has been extracted (fiber, vitamins, enzymes, mineral salts), leading result, a high-caloric value but empty of nutrients.
This is why the white sugar affects our health negatively, creating an addiction similar to that of coffee, nicotine or alcohol, accompanied by harmful effects on our body. When ingested, our body must steal calcium, B vitamins (especially B1), amino acids (tryptophan and methionine), vitamin PP and minerals for complete assimilation.
It is also related to cardiovascular disease and obesity, as excessive consumption causes accumulation and excess fat, causing the blocked arteries and capillaries and therefore, risk for heart attacks and strokes.
In turn, can cause tooth decay, acidification of the blood, softening, arteriosclerosis, diabetes, acne, stomach ulcers, cholesterol, stress, circulation problems, overstimulation of the pancreas, and so on.
Despite all this, refined sugar is an ingredient found in a large number of foods, and even if it may seem, if we stop to look at the labels of the products we buy, it is surprising that sugar is in the Most of them, whether it is a sweet or salty food, for example, a loaf of bread, tomato sauce, sausages, preserves, dressings and even products that claim to be "diet or natural." That is why we take the time to read the ingredients of the products we buy and avoid buying those containing sucrose or white sugar unnecessarily.
While the calorie intake is similar, as an alternative to refined sugar, the main natural sources of sugars are honey and fruits, which unlike the artificial, provide the body with beneficial nutrients and minerals. As for fruits, it is best if consumed fresh, as well as fructose and minerals, enzymes and vitamins provide. Unlike these, dried fruit (raisins, dates, figs, plums, etc..) Have a higher sugar content due to evaporation of water which allows higher concentrations of sugars and naturally sweet flavors to be so intense.
